AHEC MEMBER RICHARD BODEN SUPPORTS WORHTWHILE ORGANIZATION;
SITAR ARTS CENTER IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

Richard Boden, President/CEO of the Boden Group, believes in supporting an organization that provides programs which enhance the creative processes in young people. One such organization is the Sitar Arts Center, a community arts education and performance center offering after-school, Saturday and summer arts programs to Washington, D.C. inner-city residents of Adams Morgan, Mount Pleasant, and Columbia Heights. The Center is founded on the belief that arts education plus high expectations can positively change the direction of young people's lives. Sitar Arts Center currently serves 400 students a semester by providing enriching programs in music, dance, drama, writing, visual and media arts. The programs are accessible and affordable to young people in the neighborhood, because Sitar Arts Center subsidizes its students' tuition through individual and corporate contributions, with most students only paying a fee of $15 - $25 per semester for unlimited classes.
Classes are held in a safe and nurturing environment and housed in a state-of-the-art facility. More than 100 volunteers come to the Center each week to teach classes and individual lessons or help with its operations. Sitar Arts Center also partners with some of Washington, D.C.'s most prominent arts organizations who generously supply “artist in residence teachers,” and offer workshops and performances to students and their families at the Center. Current partner organizations include the National Symphony Orchestra, The Washington Ballet, Washington National Opera, Washington Performing Arts Society, Arena Stage, the Corcoran College of Art + Design—Corcoran ArtReach, CityDance Ensemble, Shakespeare Theatre Company and The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship. Sitar Arts Center 's successful program design serves as a model for like-minded organizations and public institutions, proving that when a community embraces the arts, it builds strong relationships among parents, children and its leadership through their mutual participation and pride in the creative process.
